ImportantA suspected new hip dislocation is a medical emergency. Seek immediate local care rather than waiting for an online consultation or travelling for treatment.
What Is Hip Dislocation in Adults?
Hip dislocation occurs when the ball at the top of the thigh bone, called the femoral head, leaves its socket in the pelvis. Partial displacement is called subluxation.
In adults, the problem may follow an accident, involve a previous hip replacement or relate to abnormal development of the joint. These situations require different assessments and treatments.
Developmental hip dysplasia is not always a complete dislocation. It can range from a shallow socket with inadequate coverage to longstanding displacement of the femoral head.
Different Causes of Adult Hip Dislocation
Traumatic Hip Dislocation
A major collision or fall can force a natural hip out of its socket. Fractures, cartilage damage and injuries to nearby nerves may occur at the same time.
The priority is emergency treatment, not arranging elective surgery.
Developmental Hip Dysplasia and Longstanding Dislocation
Some adults develop symptoms from a hip that did not form normally during childhood. They may experience groin pain, a limp, reduced walking tolerance or differences in leg length.
Treatment considers the shape of the socket, the position of the femoral head and the amount of remaining healthy cartilage.
Dislocation After Hip Replacement
An artificial hip can dislocate after a fall or certain movements. Repeat episodes require investigation of implant position, surrounding muscle function and other contributors to instability.
Recognising an Acute Hip Dislocation
Sudden severe hip pain, inability to move or bear weight, and a leg that appears shortened or rotated require urgent assessment. Numbness or weakness in the foot can indicate associated nerve injury.
Call emergency services and avoid unnecessary movement. Do not attempt to pull the leg straight, walk on it or reposition the joint yourself.
Prompt treatment matters because dislocation can damage the blood supply to the femoral head. Pain improving does not establish that the joint is correctly positioned.
How Is the Hip Assessed?
The first question is whether the problem is a new injury, recurrent instability or a longstanding developmental condition. The assessment reviews previous treatment and examines movement, leg length, nerve function and circulation as appropriate.
X-rays show the position of the joint and associated bone changes. CT may be needed to assess fractures, bone fragments or complex anatomy. MRI can help evaluate cartilage and other soft tissues in selected cases.
For elective planning, bring previous images and operation reports where available. A written description of “hip dislocation” alone does not identify the operation you need.
Treatment Options
Reduction After a Recent Dislocation
A clinician returns the displaced joint to position using a procedure called reduction. Sedation or anaesthesia helps control pain and muscle spasm.
Imaging afterwards checks the position and looks for associated injury. If the joint is stable and no fracture requires repair, treatment may continue without an operation.
Surgery for Associated Injury or Instability
An operation may be necessary when a fracture needs fixation, trapped tissue prevents reduction or the hip remains unstable. The procedure addresses the specific damage rather than simply repeating the reduction.
For recurrent dislocation of a replacement hip, revision surgery may involve changing the position or components of the implant.
Joint-Preserving Surgery for Hip Dysplasia
Selected adults with symptomatic dysplasia and limited arthritis may be assessed for a periacetabular osteotomy, or PAO. This repositions the socket to improve coverage of the femoral head.
Some patients also need correction of the upper femur. PAO is not an automatic solution for every longstanding dislocation.
Total Hip Replacement
When substantial cartilage loss or complex longstanding deformity makes joint preservation unsuitable, hip replacement may be considered. Surgery replaces the damaged joint surfaces rather than restoring the original socket through exercises.
The anatomy, bone quality and previous operations influence planning.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
Recovery differs considerably after reduction, fracture surgery, PAO and hip replacement. Each requires its own movement precautions and weight-bearing instructions.
Crutches or a walking frame may be needed initially. Physiotherapy develops strength and walking control while respecting healing tissues and any operated bone.
Returning to work, driving and sport involves different physical demands. Progress should be assessed clinically rather than judged solely by reduced pain.
Follow-up remains important after traumatic dislocation because cartilage damage, arthritis or osteonecrosis may become apparent later.
Risks and Treatment Limitations
The original injury can cause nerve damage, cartilage injury and disruption of blood flow to the femoral head. This last complication can lead to avascular necrosis, also called osteonecrosis.
Surgical risks vary with the procedure and include infection, blood clots, persistent pain, nerve injury and further instability. Procedures involving a bone cut also require monitoring for bone healing.
Treatment may improve function without eliminating every symptom. Longstanding muscle weakness, altered anatomy and existing arthritis can affect the outcome.
Adult Hip Dislocation Treatment Cost in Turkey
There is no single operation or standard fee for every adult hip dislocation. An estimate for planned care should identify whether the recommendation involves joint preservation, reconstruction or replacement.
Clarify hospital care, implants, rehabilitation and follow-up. Emergency care must not be delayed while comparing quotations or waiting for a price.
For a stable, previously assessed condition, share existing reports and explain whether symptoms began after an injury, childhood hip problems or replacement surgery.
Before travelling, confirm the assessment arrangements and any restrictions affecting the journey. Discuss how rehabilitation and clinical reviews would continue after returning home.
This page provides general information. A suspected acute hip dislocation requires immediate in-person emergency care.

I fortunately came across Dr. Mesut while researching orthopedic surgeons in Antalya after suffering a severe heel fracture in the United States. From the beginning, I was uneasy with the treatment plan proposed by my U.S. surgeon. After more than a year of being told that it was simply a “bad break” that would take time to heal, it was finally discovered that I had also severely sprained my ankle at the time of the injury, resulting in partial ligament and tendon tears that had been missed entirely.
When these tears were eventually identified, the solution I was given was ankle fusion surgery, an option that would have permanently limited my mobility. This did not sit right with me.
While in Antalya for my spouse's dental care, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. Mesut at MSM Klinik. His team quickly arranged comprehensive testing to fully understand what was happening with my foot. Dr. Mesut confirmed the ligament and tendon damage but was very clear that ankle fusion was not the appropriate solution for my case. Through my time there, it was clear to me that he treats a wide range of complex orthopedic conditions, not just ankle cases, which gave me even more confidence in his overall experience. From our first conversation, I felt confident in his expertise. He immediately recognized the complexity of my injury, especially given that my foot had healed incorrectly over the course of more than a year and a half.
After returning to the U.S. and doing further research, I made the decision to go back to Antalya and proceed with surgery under Dr. Mesut’s care. One of the major factors in my decision was his use of stem cell therapy, an option that was never even discussed by my doctors in the United States.
From start to finish, the level of professionalism and compassion at MSM Klinik was exceptional. Everyone in the office was attentive, organized, and supportive. Eli was especially wonderful, managing all logistics and providing clear translation throughout the entire process, which made everything seamless and stress free. During my stay, I also received IV vitamin and supportive therapies at the office designed to aid healing and speed recovery.
I am now just 2.5 weeks post surgery and already able to walk at approximately 50% weight bearing. In the U.S., I would have been non-weight bearing for at least two months before even beginning this stage. My recovery has been faster and smoother than I ever expected, and everything is healing remarkably well.

My wife had a knee injection at MSM Klinik in Antalya in Turkey last year. She had been suffering from severe knee pain for several years and the injection really helped her regain mobility. So, we returned to MSM Klinik this year, where she has now had a second injection, which we expect will help her sustain her ability to walk at least another six months free of pain. My wife has been referred to NHS orthopedic specialists in the UK and is waiting for their diagnosis also. Waiting times are very long still in the UK, so the assistance provided by MSM Klinik in Turkey in the meantime has been extremely helpful.

I visited Antalya in early May of 2025, while experiencing acute sciatica pain going down my left leg. I got in touch with MSM Klinik and had the exam scheduled promptly after talking over the phone with the staff. I had the X-rays and MRI done very promptly at Yasam Hastanesi Life Hospital. MSM Klinik staff, Mr. Mursel, took me to the hospital and was with me there while I was getting the x-rays and MRI done. Then he drove me back to the MSM Klinik where we reviewed the results with the Doctor. The Doctor appeared very knowledgeable and offered an effective treatment plan. However, it was beyond my budget. I continued to manage my back pain with NSAID.
I'm giving 5 starts for the service and promptness, but not for any medical procedure as no medical procedure was done.
The Doctor, his assistant Mr. Murcel, and the office staff were very kind, professional and attentive to my issue, which deserves a 5 star review.
The MRI, x-rays and the consultation were reasonably priced.

Physiotherapy may improve strength and symptoms, but it cannot deepen a shallow mature socket. Surgery is considered according to symptoms, anatomy and joint damage.
Does Every Hip Dislocation Require Surgery?
No. Some recent dislocations can be treated with reduction and rehabilitation. Associated fractures, persistent instability or longstanding deformity can require an operation.
Is Hip Dislocation the Same as a Hip Fracture?
No. Dislocation describes joint displacement; a fracture means a bone has broken. Both injuries can occur together and change the treatment needed.
Can a Dislocated Hip Cause Problems Years Later?
Yes. Post-traumatic arthritis or avascular necrosis can develop after the initial injury. Attend follow-up even when early recovery seems satisfactory.
