Elbow arthroscopy uses a small camera and instruments to examine and treat problems within the elbow through several small incisions.
The elbow connects the upper arm bone, or humerus, with the radius and ulna in the forearm. These joint surfaces allow bending, straightening and rotation of the forearm.
Arthroscopy may improve movement when a specific structure is blocking or irritating the joint. It is different from elbow replacement, which substitutes damaged surfaces with artificial components.
Important nerves pass close to the elbow capsule, making careful assessment and surgical planning particularly important.
Conditions That May Benefit
Loose Bodies and Locking
Small fragments of bone or cartilage can move within the joint. They may cause intermittent catching, a sudden block to movement or pain during bending and straightening.
Arthroscopy can locate and remove suitable loose bodies. The underlying reason they formed also needs consideration, particularly when cartilage damage or arthritis is present.
Bone Spurs and Restricted Movement
Bone spurs can cause painful contact at the limits of elbow movement. Scar tissue or a tightened capsule may also contribute to stiffness after an injury or operation.
Selected spurs can be removed, and restrictive tissue may be released. The expected improvement depends on whether the limitation comes from a removable obstruction or more extensive joint damage.
Synovitis
Synovitis is inflammation of the joint lining. When persistent abnormal tissue contributes to pain and swelling despite appropriate treatment, arthroscopic removal may be considered.
This does not replace medical treatment for an underlying inflammatory disease.
Osteochondral Injuries
An osteochondral injury affects cartilage and the bone supporting it. One example is osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum, which can occur in younger throwing athletes and gymnasts.
Treatment depends on whether the affected fragment is stable and capable of healing. Arthroscopy may assist removal, fixation or another cartilage-related procedure, sometimes alongside open surgery.
When Another Treatment May Be Better
Not every painful or stiff elbow benefits from arthroscopy. Physiotherapy, changes to activity and suitable medication may provide enough improvement without an operation.
Advanced joint destruction, substantial deformity or certain fractures may require an open procedure. Some nerve, tendon and ligament problems are also better addressed through a different approach.
Persistent pain on the outer elbow is not automatically an internal joint problem. Tennis elbow and other tendon conditions need their own assessment before surgery is considered.
Examination and Imaging
The assessment records how far the elbow bends and straightens, forearm rotation, stability and any numbness or weakness. The clinician also reviews earlier injuries and operations.
X-rays can show spurs, arthritis and some loose bodies. CT helps define bone anatomy, while MRI may be useful for cartilage or soft-tissue abnormalities.
Explain which tasks are limited: reaching your mouth, washing your hair, turning a key and throwing place different demands on the elbow.
A useful treatment goal may be a more comfortable functional range rather than perfectly symmetrical movement.
How Elbow Arthroscopy Is Performed
General anaesthesia, a regional nerve block or a combination may be used. The elbow is positioned to give the surgeon access while protecting nearby structures.
Sterile fluid expands the joint, and the camera is introduced through a small opening. Other openings allow instruments to remove loose fragments, address spurs or carry out the agreed treatment.
Some findings require a combined arthroscopic and open approach. These possibilities should be discussed before surgery.
A dressing or splint is applied afterwards according to the work performed. Discharge depends on pain control, nerve function and the support needed during early recovery.
Preparing for Recovery
Arrange help with tasks that require lifting, gripping or using both hands. Tell the team about your work, sporting activities and any walking aid that places weight through the arm.
Provide a complete medication list and information about previous elbow or nerve surgery.
Before leaving hospital, clarify wound care, any splint restrictions and the planned start of movement exercises. A stiffness-release procedure may require a different schedule from treatment that needs tissue protection.
Rehabilitation After Elbow Arthroscopy
Managing Swelling and Maintaining Movement
Early care focuses on comfort, swelling and protecting the incisions. Hand and wrist movement may be encouraged, with elbow exercises introduced as instructed.
After selected releases or loose body removal, guided movement can begin early to reduce the risk of renewed stiffness. This does not mean forcing the elbow through sharp pain.
Rebuilding Strength
Strengthening follows when the treated tissues can tolerate it. The programme may include grip, forearm and upper-arm exercises relevant to everyday use.
Returning too quickly to heavy tools, lifting or repetitive throwing can overload the recovering elbow.
Returning to Work and Sport
Some limited procedures allow light use relatively quickly. More extensive releases, cartilage treatment or combined surgery may require rehabilitation over several months.
Progress is assessed through movement, comfort, strength and task-specific control. The final range can remain limited when longstanding arthritis or injury has changed the joint.
Risks and Treatment Limitations
Potential complications include infection, bleeding, stiffness and injury to nerves or blood vessels. Nerve injury can cause numbness or weakness and may occasionally be permanent.
Pain or restricted movement can persist, and spurs or scar-related stiffness may recur. Further treatment is sometimes necessary.
A cold hand, increasing weakness or rapidly worsening numbness needs urgent assessment. Fever, wound discharge or escalating pain should also be reported promptly.
Removing a mechanical obstruction does not reverse all cartilage damage within an arthritic elbow.
Elbow Arthroscopy Cost in Turkey
Ask whether the quotation covers loose body removal, a stiffness release, cartilage treatment or a combined operation. These are not equivalent procedures.
Clarify anaesthesia, hospital care, imaging, any fixation materials and rehabilitation. The estimate should also explain follow-up and the possible cost of additional treatment.
Share available X-rays, scans and previous operation reports. Confirm the early rehabilitation arrangements, especially when maintaining movement after release is important.
Agree who will continue therapy after you return home and how the surgical findings and restrictions will be communicated.

I fortunately came across Dr. Mesut while researching orthopedic surgeons in Antalya after suffering a severe heel fracture in the United States. From the beginning, I was uneasy with the treatment plan proposed by my U.S. surgeon. After more than a year of being told that it was simply a “bad break” that would take time to heal, it was finally discovered that I had also severely sprained my ankle at the time of the injury, resulting in partial ligament and tendon tears that had been missed entirely.
When these tears were eventually identified, the solution I was given was ankle fusion surgery, an option that would have permanently limited my mobility. This did not sit right with me.
While in Antalya for my spouse's dental care, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. Mesut at MSM Klinik. His team quickly arranged comprehensive testing to fully understand what was happening with my foot. Dr. Mesut confirmed the ligament and tendon damage but was very clear that ankle fusion was not the appropriate solution for my case. Through my time there, it was clear to me that he treats a wide range of complex orthopedic conditions, not just ankle cases, which gave me even more confidence in his overall experience. From our first conversation, I felt confident in his expertise. He immediately recognized the complexity of my injury, especially given that my foot had healed incorrectly over the course of more than a year and a half.
After returning to the U.S. and doing further research, I made the decision to go back to Antalya and proceed with surgery under Dr. Mesut’s care. One of the major factors in my decision was his use of stem cell therapy, an option that was never even discussed by my doctors in the United States.
From start to finish, the level of professionalism and compassion at MSM Klinik was exceptional. Everyone in the office was attentive, organized, and supportive. My wife had a knee injection at MSM Klinik in Antalya in Turkey last year. She had been suffering from severe knee pain for several years and the injection really helped her regain mobility. So, we returned to MSM Klinik this year, where she has now had a second injection, which we expect will help her sustain her ability to walk at least another six months free of pain. My wife has been referred to NHS orthopedic specialists in the UK and is waiting for their diagnosis also. Waiting times are very long still in the UK, so the assistance provided by MSM Klinik in Turkey in the meantime has been extremely helpful.

I visited Antalya in early May of 2025, while experiencing acute sciatica pain going down my left leg. I got in touch with MSM Klinik and had the exam scheduled promptly after talking over the phone with the staff. I had the X-rays and MRI done very promptly at Yasam Hastanesi Life Hospital. MSM Klinik staff, Mr. Mursel, took me to the hospital and was with me there while I was getting the x-rays and MRI done. Then he drove me back to the MSM Klinik where we reviewed the results with the Doctor. The Doctor appeared very knowledgeable and offered an effective treatment plan. However, it was beyond my budget. I continued to manage my back pain with NSAID.
I'm giving 5 starts for the service and promptness, but not for any medical procedure as no medical procedure was done.
The Doctor, his assistant Mr. Murcel, and the office staff were very kind, professional and attentive to my issue, which deserves a 5 star review.
The MRI, x-rays and the consultation were reasonably priced.

Not always. Improvement depends on the cause of stiffness and the condition of the joint. A useful gain in movement may be possible without recovering a completely straight elbow.
Can It Cure Elbow Arthritis?
No. It may relieve selected mechanical problems associated with arthritis, such as spurs or loose bodies, but it does not recreate a fully healthy joint surface.
Is Open Surgery Less Appropriate?
Not necessarily. An open approach may provide safer access or better treatment for certain problems. Incision size should not outweigh the purpose and safety of the operation.
Will I Have Permanent Lifting Limits?
