Hip arthroscopy uses a camera and narrow instruments to examine and treat selected problems inside the hip through small incisions. It aims to preserve the natural joint rather than replace it.
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. Smooth cartilage covers its bearing surfaces, while a separate rim of cartilage, the labrum, helps seal and support the socket.
Arthroscopy can address certain injuries involving these structures, but it is not a suitable treatment for every cause of hip or groin pain.
Conditions That May Benefit from Hip Arthroscopy
Hip Labral Tears
A torn labrum can cause groin pain, catching or discomfort during twisting and prolonged sitting. Some tears produce no symptoms and require no operation.
When a tear matches the clinical findings and symptoms remain troublesome, repair may be considered. Preserving useful labral tissue helps maintain its sealing function. Selected damaged areas may instead require trimming or reconstruction.
Femoroacetabular Impingement
Femoroacetabular impingement, or FAI, involves abnormal contact between parts of the ball and socket during movement.
A cam shape affects the junction between the femoral head and neck. A pincer pattern involves excessive socket coverage. Both can contribute to labral and cartilage damage.
Arthroscopic bone reshaping may be considered when the anatomy, examination and symptoms indicate a treatable impingement problem.
Loose Bodies and Other Selected Problems
Arthroscopy can remove loose fragments or address certain areas of inflamed joint lining and localised cartilage damage.
The recommendation depends on where the damage is located and whether treating it is likely to improve function. These procedures should not be described as a universal cure for hip stiffness.
Who Is a Suitable Candidate?
A useful assessment establishes whether pain is coming from inside the joint. Problems involving the lower back, surrounding tendons or other structures may require different treatment.
Symptoms, examination findings and imaging should point towards the same explanation. A labral tear on MRI alone is not enough to justify surgery.
The condition of the remaining joint cartilage matters. Advanced arthritis generally makes arthroscopy less appropriate because repairing a labrum or reshaping bone does not restore extensively worn joint surfaces.
Hip dysplasia requires particular care. A shallow socket with inadequate coverage may need a different reconstructive strategy; isolated arthroscopy can leave the underlying instability unresolved.
Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
Examination assesses hip movement, walking and the positions that reproduce symptoms. X-rays show bone shape and joint-space changes.
MRI can investigate the labrum and cartilage. CT may provide additional detail about bone anatomy, while a targeted local anaesthetic injection can sometimes help clarify whether pain originates within the joint.
Bring previous reports and explain what has already been tried. The treatment discussion should cover the proposed procedure, alternatives and any limits on the improvement expected.
Non-Surgical Options
Physiotherapy may improve strength, movement control and tolerance of daily activities. Modifying aggravating exercise, adjusting prolonged sitting and using appropriate pain relief can also help.
Some people obtain sufficient improvement without surgery, even when an imaging abnormality remains.
An injection may provide temporary relief or diagnostic information. It does not automatically establish that an arthroscopy is needed or repair the labrum by itself.
How Hip Arthroscopy Is Performed
Under anaesthesia, the leg may be placed in controlled traction to create working space inside the joint. A camera and instruments enter through separate openings.
Depending on the plan, the surgeon may repair the labrum with sutures and anchors, reshape impinging bone or remove loose tissue. The joint capsule is managed according to the procedure and stability requirements.
Many patients leave hospital on the day of surgery, although an overnight stay may be needed. The operation report should explain what was actually treated because this determines the recovery instructions.
Recovery After Hip Arthroscopy
Protecting the Repair
Crutches are commonly required initially. Weight-bearing restrictions differ between a limited procedure, a labral repair and cartilage treatment.
You may also receive limits on deep bending, twisting or certain active movements. Less pain does not mean that these precautions can be stopped early.
Physiotherapy and Walking
Rehabilitation works on controlled movement, muscle activation and a comfortable walking pattern. Strength and activity are increased without overloading the healing tissues.
Simple daily tasks may improve before the hip is ready for running, deep squatting or rapid changes of direction.
Returning to Exercise
Recovery usually extends over several months. The timetable depends on the procedure, existing cartilage damage and your starting condition.
A return to sport should consider strength, movement quality and the hip's response to progressively harder training. Some people need longer-term changes to their preferred activities.
Risks and Limitations
Risks include infection, blood clots, stiffness, injury to cartilage and damage to nearby nerves or blood vessels. Traction can cause numbness around the thigh or groin, which is often temporary but still needs review.
Persistent pain, further labral injury or instability may require additional treatment. Arthroscopy cannot guarantee that hip replacement will never be needed later.
Seek urgent assessment for increasing calf swelling, wound concerns or worsening neurological symptoms. Sudden chest pain or breathlessness requires emergency care.
Hip Arthroscopy Cost in Turkey
Request an estimate that identifies the proposed labral, bone or cartilage procedure. Repair materials and the extent of reconstruction can affect the resources required.
Clarify hospital care, anaesthesia, imaging, walking aids and rehabilitation. Ask which follow-up services are included and how care would continue after your return home.
Arrange practical support for stairs, transport and everyday tasks while using crutches. Confirm the first postoperative review and obtain advice about the return journey before fixing travel dates.
Your rehabilitation plan should be available to the clinician or physiotherapist continuing your care locally.

I fortunately came across Dr. Mesut while researching orthopedic surgeons in Antalya after suffering a severe heel fracture in the United States. From the beginning, I was uneasy with the treatment plan proposed by my U.S. surgeon. After more than a year of being told that it was simply a “bad break” that would take time to heal, it was finally discovered that I had also severely sprained my ankle at the time of the injury, resulting in partial ligament and tendon tears that had been missed entirely.
When these tears were eventually identified, the solution I was given was ankle fusion surgery, an option that would have permanently limited my mobility. This did not sit right with me.
While in Antalya for my spouse's dental care, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. Mesut at MSM Klinik. His team quickly arranged comprehensive testing to fully understand what was happening with my foot. Dr. Mesut confirmed the ligament and tendon damage but was very clear that ankle fusion was not the appropriate solution for my case. Through my time there, it was clear to me that he treats a wide range of complex orthopedic conditions, not just ankle cases, which gave me even more confidence in his overall experience. From our first conversation, I felt confident in his expertise. He immediately recognized the complexity of my injury, especially given that my foot had healed incorrectly over the course of more than a year and a half.
After returning to the U.S. and doing further research, I made the decision to go back to Antalya and proceed with surgery under Dr. Mesut’s care. One of the major factors in my decision was his use of stem cell therapy, an option that was never even discussed by my doctors in the United States.
From start to finish, the level of professionalism and compassion at MSM Klinik was exceptional. Everyone in the office was attentive, organized, and supportive. My wife had a knee injection at MSM Klinik in Antalya in Turkey last year. She had been suffering from severe knee pain for several years and the injection really helped her regain mobility. So, we returned to MSM Klinik this year, where she has now had a second injection, which we expect will help her sustain her ability to walk at least another six months free of pain. My wife has been referred to NHS orthopedic specialists in the UK and is waiting for their diagnosis also. Waiting times are very long still in the UK, so the assistance provided by MSM Klinik in Turkey in the meantime has been extremely helpful.

I visited Antalya in early May of 2025, while experiencing acute sciatica pain going down my left leg. I got in touch with MSM Klinik and had the exam scheduled promptly after talking over the phone with the staff. I had the X-rays and MRI done very promptly at Yasam Hastanesi Life Hospital. MSM Klinik staff, Mr. Mursel, took me to the hospital and was with me there while I was getting the x-rays and MRI done. Then he drove me back to the MSM Klinik where we reviewed the results with the Doctor. The Doctor appeared very knowledgeable and offered an effective treatment plan. However, it was beyond my budget. I continued to manage my back pain with NSAID.
I'm giving 5 starts for the service and promptness, but not for any medical procedure as no medical procedure was done.
The Doctor, his assistant Mr. Murcel, and the office staff were very kind, professional and attentive to my issue, which deserves a 5 star review.
The MRI, x-rays and the consultation were reasonably priced.
