Shoulder Dislocation Treatment in Turkey

Discuss recurrent shoulder instability with Dr. Mesut Sançmış, an orthopaedics and traumatology specialist in Antalya. Explore rehabilitation, stabilisation surgery and recovery.

ImportantA suspected new shoulder dislocation requires urgent local medical care. Do not wait for an online consultation or travel abroad before receiving treatment.

What Is a Shoulder Dislocation?

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the ball of the upper arm bone, called the humeral head, leaves its socket in the shoulder blade. A partial displacement is known as a subluxation.

The shoulder most often dislocates forwards, although backward and downward dislocations also occur. Falls, sporting collisions and forceful movements can injure the structures that normally keep the joint stable.

Recognising an Acute Dislocation

An injured shoulder may look misshapen and become severely painful, swollen or difficult to move. Tingling, numbness or weakness can accompany the injury.

Seek immediate assessment, especially if the hand becomes cold or loses sensation. Support the arm in its current position and do not attempt to push or pull the shoulder back yourself.

Even when the joint appears to return to position on its own, follow-up assessment is important because damage may remain.

Why Does the Shoulder Keep Dislocating?

The first injury can stretch the joint capsule or tear the labrum, the rim of cartilage around the socket. A tear at the front and lower part of this rim is called a Bankart lesion.

Repeated episodes can also damage the socket or humeral head. This bone damage may make a soft-tissue repair alone less reliable.

Some people have instability associated with naturally loose ligaments rather than one major accident. Targeted rehabilitation is particularly important in this group.

Assessment and Imaging

The assessment considers how the first episode occurred, how often the shoulder slips and which positions feel unsafe. Examination checks movement, muscle strength, sensation and joint stability.

X-rays identify the joint position and associated fractures. MRI may be used to assess the labrum, ligaments or rotator cuff, while CT can help measure bone loss when planning surgery.

Persistent weakness after a dislocation also needs investigation; instability is not the only possible consequence of the injury.

Treatment After a First Dislocation

Returning the Joint to Position

A trained clinician performs reduction, returning the humeral head to its socket. Pain relief, local anaesthesia or sedation may be used as appropriate.

The team checks circulation and nerve function and confirms the joint position after treatment. Associated fractures or an unsuccessful reduction may require surgery.

Rehabilitation Without Surgery

Some first-time dislocations can be managed with a period of sling support followed by physiotherapy. Exercises progressively restore movement and strengthen the muscles controlling the shoulder and shoulder blade.

Sling duration and activity restrictions should reflect the injury and the risk of stiffness.

When Is Shoulder Stabilisation Surgery Considered?

Surgery may be considered for repeated dislocations, persistent instability despite rehabilitation or associated structural damage. Some young athletes at high risk of recurrence may discuss early stabilisation after their first episode.

The choice also depends on the amount of bone damage, previous operations and sporting or occupational demands.

Surgical Options for Recurrent Dislocation

Arthroscopic Bankart Repair

A Bankart repair reattaches the torn labrum and associated capsule to the socket using sutures and anchors. It is commonly performed through keyhole incisions, with a camera guiding the repair.

This approach is considered when the damaged soft tissues can provide adequate stability once repaired.

Latarjet and Bone Reconstruction

When significant bone loss or a failed previous repair affects stability, a bone-restoring procedure may be considered.

A Latarjet procedure transfers a small part of the shoulder blade, with its attached tendon, to the front of the socket. Other reconstruction techniques address different defects.

Recovery After Shoulder Dislocation Treatment

Recovery after an uncomplicated reduction differs from recovery after ligament repair or bone reconstruction. After surgery, a sling and limits on lifting or outward rotation protect the repair.

Rehabilitation progresses from controlled movement to strengthening and activity-specific exercises. Desk work, driving, overhead work and contact sports require different levels of function.

Recovery after stabilisation takes several months. Contact sport may require around six to nine months or longer, depending on the procedure and progress. Clearance should consider strength, control and confidence, not time alone.

Risks and Expected Outcomes

Stabilisation aims to reduce further dislocations and improve confidence using the arm. It cannot guarantee permanent stability or an unrestricted return to every sport.

Risks include infection, stiffness, persistent pain, nerve or blood vessel injury and recurrent instability. Bone procedures also carry risks involving graft healing or fixation, and further treatment may be needed.

Shoulder Dislocation Treatment Cost in Turkey

For planned treatment, request a quotation identifying the proposed procedure, hospital care, implants and rehabilitation. A soft-tissue repair and a bone reconstruction should not be treated as the same package.

Clarify imaging, follow-up and any additional charges. Emergency assessment must never be delayed while comparing prices.

Planning Care in Antalya

Share existing scans and records of previous reductions or surgery. Before travelling for planned care, confirm early follow-up and the practical help needed while using a sling.

Agree how rehabilitation will continue at home and ask when flying is appropriate.

This information does not replace an individual assessment. A suspected acute dislocation requires urgent in-person care.

I fortunately came across Dr. Mesut while researching orthopedic surgeons in Antalya after suffering a severe heel fracture in the United States. From the beginning, I was uneasy with the treatment plan proposed by my U.S. surgeon. After more than a year of being told that it was simply a “bad break” that would take time to heal, it was finally discovered that I had also severely sprained my ankle at the time of the injury, resulting in partial ligament and tendon tears that had been missed entirely.

When these tears were eventually identified, the solution I was given was ankle fusion surgery, an option that would have permanently limited my mobility. This did not sit right with me.

While in Antalya for my spouse's dental care, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. Mesut at MSM Klinik. His team quickly arranged comprehensive testing to fully understand what was happening with my foot. Dr. Mesut confirmed the ligament and tendon damage but was very clear that ankle fusion was not the appropriate solution for my case. Through my time there, it was clear to me that he treats a wide range of complex orthopedic conditions, not just ankle cases, which gave me even more confidence in his overall experience. From our first conversation, I felt confident in his expertise. He immediately recognized the complexity of my injury, especially given that my foot had healed incorrectly over the course of more than a year and a half.

After returning to the U.S. and doing further research, I made the decision to go back to Antalya and proceed with surgery under Dr. Mesut’s care. One of the major factors in my decision was his use of stem cell therapy, an option that was never even discussed by my doctors in the United States.

From start to finish, the level of professionalism and compassion at MSM Klinik was exceptional. Everyone in the office was attentive, organized, and supportive. Eli was especially wonderful, managing all logistics and providing clear translation throughout the entire process, which made everything seamless and stress free. During my stay, I also received IV vitamin and supportive therapies at the office designed to aid healing and speed recovery.

I am now just 2.5 weeks post surgery and already able to walk at approximately 50% weight bearing. In the U.S., I would have been non-weight bearing for at least two months before even beginning this stage. My recovery has been faster and smoother than I ever expected, and everything is healing remarkably well.

My wife had a knee injection at MSM Klinik in Antalya in Turkey last year. She had been suffering from severe knee pain for several years and the injection really helped her regain mobility. So, we returned to MSM Klinik this year, where she has now had a second injection, which we expect will help her sustain her ability to walk at least another six months free of pain. My wife has been referred to NHS orthopedic specialists in the UK and is waiting for their diagnosis also. Waiting times are very long still in the UK, so the assistance provided by MSM Klinik in Turkey in the meantime has been extremely helpful.

I visited Antalya in early May of 2025, while experiencing acute sciatica pain going down my left leg. I got in touch with MSM Klinik and had the exam scheduled promptly after talking over the phone with the staff. I had the X-rays and MRI done very promptly at Yasam Hastanesi Life Hospital. MSM Klinik staff, Mr. Mursel, took me to the hospital and was with me there while I was getting the x-rays and MRI done. Then he drove me back to the MSM Klinik where we reviewed the results with the Doctor. The Doctor appeared very knowledgeable and offered an effective treatment plan. However, it was beyond my budget. I continued to manage my back pain with NSAID.

I'm giving 5 starts for the service and promptness, but not for any medical procedure as no medical procedure was done.

The Doctor, his assistant Mr. Murcel, and the office staff were very kind, professional and attentive to my issue, which deserves a 5 star review.

The MRI, x-rays and the consultation were reasonably priced.

In addition to achieving my desired results, the clinic and doctor were constantly in touch with me (both in person and by phone) and responded quickly to any questions or concerns I had. This gave me peace of mind and made the process feel much easier, while giving me confidence in it.

Is a Dislocated Shoulder the Same as a Separated Shoulder?

No. A dislocation affects the main ball-and-socket joint. A separated shoulder involves the joint where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade and requires a different assessment.

Can Physiotherapy Prevent Another Dislocation?

Physiotherapy can improve muscular support and control, but it cannot guarantee prevention. Significant bone damage or persistent instability may require additional treatment.

Will Every First Dislocation Need Surgery?

No. Many are managed without an operation. The risk of recurrence and associated injuries determine whether early surgical discussion is appropriate.

Does Less Pain Mean My Shoulder Has Healed?

Not necessarily. Pain may settle before strength, tissue healing and stability are sufficient for demanding activity. Follow the rehabilitation plan before resuming lifting or sport.
