Paediatric orthopaedics addresses conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles and movement while children are growing. It includes injuries, differences present from birth and problems that become noticeable during development.
The purpose of assessment is not to make every child stand or walk identically. It is to distinguish normal variation from a condition that needs monitoring or treatment.
Why Growth Changes the Treatment Plan
Growth plates are areas of developing tissue near the ends of long bones. They contribute to bone length and can be affected by injuries or disease.
A treatment that suits an adult may interfere with a child's growth. Equally, remaining growth can sometimes help correct an alignment problem when treatment is timed carefully.
Common Reasons for Assessment
Fractures and Growth Plate Injuries
Falls and sporting injuries can cause fractures that need different management from adult breaks. Some heal with a cast or splint; others require repositioning or surgical fixation.
Growth plate injuries deserve particular attention because an abnormal growth pattern may appear after the initial injury has healed.
Walking Patterns and Leg Alignment
Intoeing, bow legs and knock knees can occur during normal development. Many improve naturally, but pain, increasing asymmetry or a worsening pattern needs assessment.
The clinician considers the child's age and examines the whole limb. Special shoes, braces or exercises should not be assumed necessary for every developmental variation.
Hip Development
Developmental dysplasia of the hip involves a socket and femoral head that do not fit together normally.
Treatment depends on age and severity. Options can include a harness, casting or surgery; an approach suitable for a young infant may not suit an older child.
Clubfoot and Other Foot Concerns
Clubfoot is a structural condition in which the foot turns inwards and downwards. Treatment often begins in infancy using serial casting, sometimes with a small tendon procedure, followed by bracing.
This is different from painless flexible flatfoot. Many children with flexible low arches do not need treatment, while painful or rigid feet require closer examination.
Unequal Leg Lengths
A leg length difference may be present from birth or develop after injury or illness. Assessment considers the current difference and how it may change before growth finishes.
Observation or a shoe lift may be enough for a small discrepancy. Larger differences can require a carefully timed surgical plan rather than immediate lengthening.
What Happens During the Appointment?
Bring information about when the concern started, any injuries, developmental milestones and previous treatment. For an intermittent walking problem, a short video may help explain what you have noticed, but it cannot replace examination.
The assessment may include watching your child walk or play, checking joint movement and comparing limb lengths.
Imaging is selected for the clinical question. X-rays assess bone alignment, ultrasound can examine infant hips, and other scans may be needed for specific findings. Not every concern requires an MRI.
Non-Surgical Treatment and Monitoring
Observation includes planned reviews to check development rather than ignoring a concern.
Physiotherapy may support movement, strength or recovery from an injury. Casts and braces serve different purposes, from protecting a fracture to maintaining a correction.
Ask how a support should fit, when it can be removed and which skin changes need reporting. Do not adjust a prescribed harness or abandon a brace schedule without advice.
When Might Surgery Be Recommended?
Surgery may be needed for an unstable fracture, a significant structural deformity or a condition that threatens function as the child grows.
Possible approaches include fixation, selected guided-growth procedures or an osteotomy that changes bone alignment. They are not interchangeable: each addresses a different problem.
The discussion should cover expected benefit, alternatives, anaesthesia and procedure-specific risks. Infection, incomplete correction, healing problems or altered growth can require further care.
Complex conditions may need a dedicated paediatric orthopaedic team. Confirm the required expertise and treatment setting before making arrangements.
Recovery, School and Play
Recovery planning should address school attendance, transport, bathing and safe participation in daily activities. Families need clear instructions about weight-bearing, casts, exercises and return to sport.
Follow-up can continue beyond the first recovery period, especially after growth plate injury or growth-related correction. The team should explain what changes would prompt an earlier visit.
Symptoms That Need Urgent Care
Seek urgent local assessment if your child suddenly cannot bear weight, has a visibly deformed limb or develops severe joint pain with fever or general illness.
An unexplained limp also needs medical review. Hip problems can sometimes be felt as pain in the thigh or knee.
Do not delay necessary care while arranging travel or waiting for an online response.
Paediatric Orthopaedic Treatment Costs in Turkey
Ask for costs based on the assessment and proposed care, not a generic children's surgery package. Clarify imaging, brace fitting or adjustments, hospital care and follow-up.
For treatment requiring repeated visits, establish how reviews will continue near home. Share your child's age and diagnosis with the team before arranging travel.

I fortunately came across Dr. Mesut while researching orthopedic surgeons in Antalya after suffering a severe heel fracture in the United States. From the beginning, I was uneasy with the treatment plan proposed by my U.S. surgeon. After more than a year of being told that it was simply a “bad break” that would take time to heal, it was finally discovered that I had also severely sprained my ankle at the time of the injury, resulting in partial ligament and tendon tears that had been missed entirely.
When these tears were eventually identified, the solution I was given was ankle fusion surgery, an option that would have permanently limited my mobility. This did not sit right with me.
While in Antalya for my spouse's dental care, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. Mesut at MSM Klinik. His team quickly arranged comprehensive testing to fully understand what was happening with my foot. Dr. Mesut confirmed the ligament and tendon damage but was very clear that ankle fusion was not the appropriate solution for my case. Through my time there, it was clear to me that he treats a wide range of complex orthopedic conditions, not just ankle cases, which gave me even more confidence in his overall experience. From our first conversation, I felt confident in his expertise. He immediately recognized the complexity of my injury, especially given that my foot had healed incorrectly over the course of more than a year and a half.
After returning to the U.S. and doing further research, I made the decision to go back to Antalya and proceed with surgery under Dr. Mesut’s care. One of the major factors in my decision was his use of stem cell therapy, an option that was never even discussed by my doctors in the United States.
From start to finish, the level of professionalism and compassion at MSM Klinik was exceptional. Everyone in the office was attentive, organized, and supportive. Eli was especially wonderful, managing all logistics and providing clear translation throughout the entire process, which made everything seamless and stress free. During my stay, I also received IV vitamin and supportive therapies at the office designed to aid healing and speed recovery.
I am now just 2.5 weeks post surgery and already able to walk at approximately 50% weight bearing. In the U.S., I would have been non-weight bearing for at least two months before even beginning this stage. My recovery has been faster and smoother than I ever expected, and everything is healing remarkably well.

My wife had a knee injection at MSM Klinik in Antalya in Turkey last year. She had been suffering from severe knee pain for several years and the injection really helped her regain mobility. So, we returned to MSM Klinik this year, where she has now had a second injection, which we expect will help her sustain her ability to walk at least another six months free of pain. My wife has been referred to NHS orthopedic specialists in the UK and is waiting for their diagnosis also. Waiting times are very long still in the UK, so the assistance provided by MSM Klinik in Turkey in the meantime has been extremely helpful.

I visited Antalya in early May of 2025, while experiencing acute sciatica pain going down my left leg. I got in touch with MSM Klinik and had the exam scheduled promptly after talking over the phone with the staff. I had the X-rays and MRI done very promptly at Yasam Hastanesi Life Hospital. MSM Klinik staff, Mr. Mursel, took me to the hospital and was with me there while I was getting the x-rays and MRI done. Then he drove me back to the MSM Klinik where we reviewed the results with the Doctor. The Doctor appeared very knowledgeable and offered an effective treatment plan. However, it was beyond my budget. I continued to manage my back pain with NSAID.
I'm giving 5 starts for the service and promptness, but not for any medical procedure as no medical procedure was done.
The Doctor, his assistant Mr. Murcel, and the office staff were very kind, professional and attentive to my issue, which deserves a 5 star review.
The MRI, x-rays and the consultation were reasonably priced.

Does Seeing an Orthopaedic Surgeon Mean My Child Needs Surgery?
No. Many childhood conditions need monitoring, reassurance or non-surgical treatment. The purpose of the appointment is to establish which approach is appropriate.
Should Every Child with Flat Feet Wear Insoles?
No. Painless flexible flatfoot often needs no treatment. Pain, stiffness or difficulty keeping up with activity should be assessed before choosing a support.
Can a Child Outgrow Bow Legs or Intoeing?
Many developmental patterns improve with growth. A painful, one-sided or worsening change should not be assumed to resolve without assessment.
Can a Child Still Need Follow-up After Pain Stops?
Yes. Some injuries and corrections require checks on alignment or growth even after everyday activity becomes comfortable.
