Ankle arthroscopy is keyhole surgery that allows an orthopaedic surgeon to examine and treat structures inside the ankle using a small camera and specialised instruments.
The main ankle joint connects the tibia and fibula in the lower leg with the talus below. Cartilage covers the bearing surfaces, while ligaments support stability.
Arthroscopy may address a specific problem left after a sprain, fracture or repeated loading. It does not mean that every ankle injury needs an operation or that all procedures allow immediate walking.
Problems That May Be Treated
Anterior Ankle Impingement
Anterior impingement occurs when bone or soft tissue at the front of the ankle is pinched during movement. It can cause pain when bending the ankle upwards, squatting or walking uphill.
Arthroscopy may remove selected spurs or scar tissue when they match the symptoms and non-surgical treatment has not provided sufficient relief.
Posterior Ankle Impingement
Pain at the back of the ankle when pointing the foot down can relate to posterior impingement. This sometimes involves an accessory bone called the os trigonum.
Selected problems may be treated through openings at the back rather than the front of the ankle. The approach depends on the structure responsible for symptoms.
Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus
An osteochondral lesion affects the joint cartilage and underlying bone of the talus. It may develop after an ankle injury and cause deep pain, swelling or catching.
Treatment depends on the lesion's size, depth and stability. Arthroscopic options may include stabilising a fragment, removing damaged tissue or stimulating repair through drilling or microfracture.
Larger or more complex lesions may require grafting or a different operation.
Loose Bodies, Synovitis and Instability
Arthroscopy can remove loose bone or cartilage fragments and selected areas of persistently inflamed joint lining.
It may also accompany ligament stabilisation when an unstable ankle has additional problems inside the joint. Removing scar tissue alone does not necessarily correct stretched or torn ligaments.
Assessment Before Ankle Arthroscopy
The consultation reviews previous sprains, fractures, swelling and the positions that provoke pain. Examination assesses ankle movement, walking, tenderness and stability.
X-rays show bone shape, joint narrowing and some loose fragments. MRI may reveal cartilage, ligament and soft-tissue injuries. CT can provide more detail about bone defects or spurs.
A persistent symptom should have a plausible explanation before surgery is proposed. Imaging findings are interpreted alongside the examination rather than treated in isolation.
Non-Surgical Options and Limitations
Physiotherapy can improve calf strength, balance and control after an ankle injury. Activity adjustments, supportive footwear, a brace and appropriate medication may also help.
The relevance of each option depends on whether symptoms arise from instability, cartilage damage, inflammation or another condition.
Simple arthroscopic debridement is usually not an effective solution for advanced ankle arthritis. Extensive joint damage may require a different discussion, including joint-preserving surgery, fusion or replacement in suitable cases.
An arthroscopically assisted fusion is a separate operation with its own goals and recovery requirements.
How Ankle Arthroscopy Is Performed
The operation is performed under general or regional anaesthesia, according to the procedure and your health.
Small openings allow the camera and instruments to enter the joint. Sterile fluid improves the view, and a distraction device may be used to create working space.
The surgeon then carries out the agreed treatment. Some cartilage or ligament procedures require additional fixation or an open incision.
A dressing is applied afterwards, and a boot, splint or cast may be needed. Many patients leave hospital the same day, although more complex treatment can require a longer stay.
Preparing for Your Procedure
Discuss regular medication, previous blood clots, circulation problems and any skin wounds around the ankle. Follow the clinical team's instructions about medicines and fasting.
Arrange help with stairs, meals and transport if you will be using crutches. Practising safe use of walking aids beforehand can make the initial restrictions easier to manage.
Ask specifically whether the operation involves cartilage repair or ligament reconstruction, as this can significantly change the loading instructions.
Recovery After Ankle Arthroscopy
Swelling and Wound Care
Some swelling and discomfort are expected initially. Elevation and prescribed pain relief can help, while dressings should be managed according to the instructions provided.
Increasing activity too quickly can cause the ankle to swell more. The early goal is controlled mobility rather than a rapid return to long walks.
Weight-Bearing Restrictions
After a limited loose body or impingement procedure, protected walking may begin relatively early. Cartilage treatment, ligament repair and fusion can require substantially longer protection.
Do not assume that a comfortable ankle is ready for full weight-bearing. The restriction may be protecting tissue that cannot yet tolerate normal loading.
Physiotherapy and Return to Sport
Rehabilitation develops movement, calf strength, balance and confidence on uneven ground. Running and jumping are introduced only when the operation and functional progress allow them.
Limited procedures may improve over weeks, while cartilage or ligament treatment commonly requires several months. Return-to-sport decisions should assess control and endurance as well as pain.
Risks and Possible Complications
Complications include infection, blood clots, bleeding, stiffness and damage to cartilage, nerves or blood vessels. Small nerves near the incisions can be irritated, causing numbness or a sensitive scar.
Persistent pain, recurrent symptoms or failure of cartilage treatment may require further care. Rarely, prolonged pain and sensitivity can develop after surgery.
Seek prompt assessment for wound discharge, fever, increasing calf swelling or a cold or discoloured foot. Chest pain or sudden breathlessness requires emergency care.
Ankle Arthroscopy Cost in Turkey
The estimate should identify the treatment performed through the arthroscope. Spur removal, cartilage work and combined ligament repair involve different resources and aftercare.
Clarify hospital care, anaesthesia, imaging, repair materials, walking aids and physiotherapy. Ask which reviews are included and how an extended stay or additional treatment would be charged.
Choose arrangements that accommodate crutches, swelling management and access to appointments. Confirm whether you will need help with everyday activities.
Before returning home, obtain a written rehabilitation plan and clarify who will review progress. The timing of flights should account for mobility restrictions and individual blood clot risk.

I fortunately came across Dr. Mesut while researching orthopedic surgeons in Antalya after suffering a severe heel fracture in the United States. From the beginning, I was uneasy with the treatment plan proposed by my U.S. surgeon. After more than a year of being told that it was simply a “bad break” that would take time to heal, it was finally discovered that I had also severely sprained my ankle at the time of the injury, resulting in partial ligament and tendon tears that had been missed entirely.
When these tears were eventually identified, the solution I was given was ankle fusion surgery, an option that would have permanently limited my mobility. This did not sit right with me.
While in Antalya for my spouse's dental care, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. Mesut at MSM Klinik. His team quickly arranged comprehensive testing to fully understand what was happening with my foot. Dr. Mesut confirmed the ligament and tendon damage but was very clear that ankle fusion was not the appropriate solution for my case. Through my time there, it was clear to me that he treats a wide range of complex orthopedic conditions, not just ankle cases, which gave me even more confidence in his overall experience. From our first conversation, I felt confident in his expertise. He immediately recognized the complexity of my injury, especially given that my foot had healed incorrectly over the course of more than a year and a half.
After returning to the U.S. and doing further research, I made the decision to go back to Antalya and proceed with surgery under Dr. Mesut’s care. One of the major factors in my decision was his use of stem cell therapy, an option that was never even discussed by my doctors in the United States.
From start to finish, the level of professionalism and compassion at MSM Klinik was exceptional. Everyone in the office was attentive, organized, and supportive. My wife had a knee injection at MSM Klinik in Antalya in Turkey last year. She had been suffering from severe knee pain for several years and the injection really helped her regain mobility. So, we returned to MSM Klinik this year, where she has now had a second injection, which we expect will help her sustain her ability to walk at least another six months free of pain. My wife has been referred to NHS orthopedic specialists in the UK and is waiting for their diagnosis also. Waiting times are very long still in the UK, so the assistance provided by MSM Klinik in Turkey in the meantime has been extremely helpful.

I visited Antalya in early May of 2025, while experiencing acute sciatica pain going down my left leg. I got in touch with MSM Klinik and had the exam scheduled promptly after talking over the phone with the staff. I had the X-rays and MRI done very promptly at Yasam Hastanesi Life Hospital. MSM Klinik staff, Mr. Mursel, took me to the hospital and was with me there while I was getting the x-rays and MRI done. Then he drove me back to the MSM Klinik where we reviewed the results with the Doctor. The Doctor appeared very knowledgeable and offered an effective treatment plan. However, it was beyond my budget. I continued to manage my back pain with NSAID.
I'm giving 5 starts for the service and promptness, but not for any medical procedure as no medical procedure was done.
The Doctor, his assistant Mr. Murcel, and the office staff were very kind, professional and attentive to my issue, which deserves a 5 star review.
The MRI, x-rays and the consultation were reasonably priced.
