Discuss injections and outpatient orthopaedic care with Dr. Mesut Sançmış in Antalya. Understand the purpose, limitations and aftercare of the proposed procedure.
Outpatient orthopaedic procedures are interventions that can be performed without a planned overnight hospital stay. Depending on the diagnosis, they may help investigate swelling, reduce symptoms or protect an injured limb.
Examples include joint aspiration, selected injections and fitting or adjusting a cast or splint. They are different from major reconstructive surgery.
Assessment Comes Before the Procedure
Pain and swelling can result from arthritis, injury, inflammation or infection. The appropriate response depends on the cause, not just the location of discomfort.
The consultation reviews your symptoms, earlier treatment, medical conditions and medicines. Examination and selected tests help establish whether an injection, aspiration or another intervention is appropriate.
Discuss the desired outcome in practical terms, such as sleeping more comfortably or participating in rehabilitation.
Joint and Soft-Tissue Injections
Corticosteroid Injections
Corticosteroids reduce inflammation and may relieve symptoms in selected joints, bursae or tendon-sheath conditions. A bursa is a small fluid-filled structure that reduces friction between tissues.
Relief can make exercise or daily activity more manageable, but the injection does not rebuild lost cartilage or repair a torn tendon.
For osteoarthritis, NICE describes the expected benefit as short term, commonly around two to ten weeks. The response varies, and this range should not be applied to every injected condition.
Local Anaesthetic and Diagnostic Injections
Local anaesthetic may provide temporary numbness and pain relief. In selected cases, the response to a targeted injection can help investigate where symptoms originate.
This information is considered alongside examination and imaging. A brief improvement does not, by itself, prove that an operation is necessary.
The clinician should explain whether an injection is mainly diagnostic, therapeutic or intended to serve both purposes.
Ultrasound-Guided Injections
Ultrasound may help guide a needle towards the intended joint or soft tissue. It allows the clinician to see nearby structures while positioning the needle.
Guidance can assist accurate placement, but it does not guarantee a useful clinical response. Confirm whether guidance is needed and included in the proposed treatment.
Joint Aspiration
Joint aspiration, also called arthrocentesis, removes fluid with a needle and syringe. It may reduce pressure in a swollen joint or provide a sample for analysis.
Laboratory testing can help investigate infection, crystal-related arthritis and other causes of swelling.
Aspiration and injection are not the same procedure. A suspected infected joint requires urgent investigation and treatment, not a routine steroid injection.
Ask whether the fluid will be analysed, who will review the result and when further advice will be provided.
Casts, Splints and Supportive Care
A cast or splint can protect an injured bone or soft tissue while it heals. The support must match the injury and allow for changes in swelling.
Follow-up checks may assess fit, skin condition and alignment.
Do not cut, remove or alter a support without instructions. Increasing pain, numbness, discoloured fingers or toes, or loss of movement needs prompt assessment.
Material choices do not remove the need for care instructions. Water exposure, walking and activity restrictions must be confirmed for the specific support.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Tell the clinician about allergies, diabetes, blood-thinning medicines, immune-suppressing treatment and any current infection. Mention recent injections and any planned operation on the same area.
These details can influence whether the procedure should go ahead or how it should be timed. Do not stop prescribed medicines without individual instructions.
Ask whether you can eat normally, whether you need someone to accompany you and whether driving afterwards will be appropriate.
What Happens During an Injection or Aspiration?
The clinician confirms the treatment site, explains the procedure and obtains consent. The skin is cleaned, and local anaesthetic may be used where appropriate.
A needle delivers medication or withdraws fluid. Imaging guidance may be used if needed, and a small dressing usually covers the puncture site afterwards.
Before leaving, obtain instructions on activity, dressing care and follow-up. Where numbness or discomfort could affect balance or control, arrange safe transport rather than assuming you can immediately drive or walk normally.
Aftercare and Monitoring the Response
Some soreness or a temporary pain flare can occur after an injection. Follow advice on rest, movement and the gradual return to exercise.
Immediate relief may come from local anaesthetic and can wear off before a steroid begins to help. Record the change in symptoms and useful activities rather than judging success only in the first hour.
Report severe or worsening pain, marked warmth or swelling, fever or drainage promptly. These symptoms need assessment for complications and should not automatically be dismissed as a normal flare.
Risks and Treatment Limitations
Needle procedures carry risks including bruising, bleeding, infection and reactions to injected substances. Steroids may also cause temporary blood glucose elevation, skin colour changes or thinning of nearby tissue.
Repeated injections can have additional effects on cartilage or tendons. The decision to repeat treatment should consider previous benefit, the interval and the risks for the specific site.
Neither image guidance nor a brief procedure makes treatment risk-free. Persistent symptoms may require rehabilitation, a revised diagnosis or discussion of other treatment options.

I fortunately came across Dr. Mesut while researching orthopedic surgeons in Antalya after suffering a severe heel fracture in the United States. From the beginning, I was uneasy with the treatment plan proposed by my U.S. surgeon. After more than a year of being told that it was simply a “bad break” that would take time to heal, it was finally discovered that I had also severely sprained my ankle at the time of the injury, resulting in partial ligament and tendon tears that had been missed entirely.
When these tears were eventually identified, the solution I was given was ankle fusion surgery, an option that would have permanently limited my mobility. This did not sit right with me.
While in Antalya for my spouse's dental care, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. Mesut at MSM Klinik. His team quickly arranged comprehensive testing to fully understand what was happening with my foot. Dr. Mesut confirmed the ligament and tendon damage but was very clear that ankle fusion was not the appropriate solution for my case. Through my time there, it was clear to me that he treats a wide range of complex orthopedic conditions, not just ankle cases, which gave me even more confidence in his overall experience. From our first conversation, I felt confident in his expertise. He immediately recognized the complexity of my injury, especially given that my foot had healed incorrectly over the course of more than a year and a half.
After returning to the U.S. and doing further research, I made the decision to go back to Antalya and proceed with surgery under Dr. Mesut’s care. One of the major factors in my decision was his use of stem cell therapy, an option that was never even discussed by my doctors in the United States.
From start to finish, the level of professionalism and compassion at MSM Klinik was exceptional. Everyone in the office was attentive, organized, and supportive. Eli was especially wonderful, managing all logistics and providing clear translation throughout the entire process, which made everything seamless and stress free. During my stay, I also received IV vitamin and supportive therapies at the office designed to aid healing and speed recovery.
I am now just 2.5 weeks post surgery and already able to walk at approximately 50% weight bearing. In the U.S., I would have been non-weight bearing for at least two months before even beginning this stage. My recovery has been faster and smoother than I ever expected, and everything is healing remarkably well.

My wife had a knee injection at MSM Klinik in Antalya in Turkey last year. She had been suffering from severe knee pain for several years and the injection really helped her regain mobility. So, we returned to MSM Klinik this year, where she has now had a second injection, which we expect will help her sustain her ability to walk at least another six months free of pain. My wife has been referred to NHS orthopedic specialists in the UK and is waiting for their diagnosis also. Waiting times are very long still in the UK, so the assistance provided by MSM Klinik in Turkey in the meantime has been extremely helpful.

I visited Antalya in early May of 2025, while experiencing acute sciatica pain going down my left leg. I got in touch with MSM Klinik and had the exam scheduled promptly after talking over the phone with the staff. I had the X-rays and MRI done very promptly at Yasam Hastanesi Life Hospital. MSM Klinik staff, Mr. Mursel, took me to the hospital and was with me there while I was getting the x-rays and MRI done. Then he drove me back to the MSM Klinik where we reviewed the results with the Doctor. The Doctor appeared very knowledgeable and offered an effective treatment plan. However, it was beyond my budget. I continued to manage my back pain with NSAID.
I'm giving 5 starts for the service and promptness, but not for any medical procedure as no medical procedure was done.
The Doctor, his assistant Mr. Murcel, and the office staff were very kind, professional and attentive to my issue, which deserves a 5 star review.
The MRI, x-rays and the consultation were reasonably priced.

Will I Receive an Injection at My First Appointment?
Not necessarily. The clinician must first establish the diagnosis and check whether the treatment is appropriate. Further tests or a different approach may be recommended.
Can Injections Permanently Cure Arthritis?
No. A corticosteroid injection may reduce symptoms but does not reverse established cartilage loss. Longer-term care still depends on the underlying joint problem.
Can Fluid Return After Joint Aspiration?
Yes. Fluid may accumulate again if the reason for the swelling remains active. The examination and test results guide further treatment.
Are Repeated Injections Always Appropriate?
No. Limited benefit or increasing risk may make repetition unsuitable. The next step should be reviewed rather than continuing a fixed course automatically.
