Discuss hip replacement with Dr. Mesut Sançmış in Antalya. Explore treatment for advanced joint damage, the available implant options and recovery after surgery.
Hip replacement, or hip arthroplasty, replaces damaged joint surfaces with artificial components. The natural hip is a ball-and-socket joint formed by the femoral head at the top of the thigh bone and the acetabulum in the pelvis.
In a total hip replacement, both sides are replaced. The implant creates a new bearing surface intended to reduce pain and improve movement.
Replacement treats damage inside the joint. It is different from hip arthroscopy, fracture fixation or an operation that repositions the socket.
When Is Hip Replacement Considered?
Osteoarthritis is a common reason for surgery. Other indications include inflammatory arthritis, avascular necrosis, damage related to hip dysplasia and selected fractures.
For longstanding joint disease, replacement may be considered when pain interrupts sleep, walking or everyday tasks despite appropriate non-surgical care. Trouble putting on shoes, climbing stairs or getting out of a chair can be relevant examples.
Medication, exercise, walking aids and selected injections may help before surgery is needed. The decision reflects symptoms, examination and imaging together, rather than age or an X-ray alone.
Assessment and Surgical Planning
Your assessment reviews pain location, walking tolerance, previous operations and general health. Examination checks hip movement, muscle function and leg length.
X-rays usually provide the main information about joint damage and bone shape. Additional scans may be needed for complex anatomy or earlier surgery.
Describe any back, knee or nerve-related symptoms as well. Hip replacement will not necessarily resolve pain arising from another area.
Planning also considers infection risk, bone strength and the support available during recovery.
Types of Hip Replacement
Total Hip Replacement
Total replacement uses a new ball attached to a stem in the thigh bone and a cup with a bearing surface in the pelvis. It is commonly used when both sides of the joint are damaged.
Components may combine metal, ceramic and medical-grade plastic. The material is one consideration alongside fit, fixation and clinical evidence.
Partial Hip Replacement
Partial replacement, or hemiarthroplasty, replaces the femoral head while leaving the natural socket. It is most often considered for selected hip fractures.
It is not an equivalent, lower-cost substitute for total replacement when arthritis has damaged the socket as well.
Cemented and Uncemented Fixation
Some components are secured with bone cement. Others have surfaces designed to allow bone to grow onto the implant. A combination of fixation methods may be used.
Bone quality, anatomy and the proposed implant influence the choice; uncemented fixation is not automatically better for every patient.
Surgical Approaches and the Operation
Anterior, lateral and posterior approaches describe the direction used to reach the hip. Each involves different handling of the surrounding tissues.
The appropriate approach depends on anatomy, previous surgery and the surgeon's experience. Incision position alone does not determine the overall result.
Under spinal or general anaesthesia, the surgeon removes the damaged joint surfaces and prepares the bones for the selected components. Implant position, stability and leg length are assessed before closure.
Discuss why the proposed approach suits your case and which movement precautions apply afterwards.
Preparing for Hip Replacement
Preoperative checks review your medical fitness, medications and any infections that require attention. Tell the team about blood-thinning medication, diabetes and previous blood clots.
You may receive advice on exercise, nutrition and smoking before surgery. Do not stop prescribed medicines without an agreed plan.
Prepare for temporary walking support. Check access to stairs, bathroom arrangements and help with shopping or meals so discharge does not leave practical needs unresolved.
Recovery After Hip Replacement
Early Walking and Hospital Care
Once medically appropriate, the team helps you stand and walk using crutches or a walking frame. Pain management and measures to reduce blood clots support this stage.
Discharge depends on safe mobility, wound condition and your overall recovery. Being able to take supported steps is an early milestone, not the completion of rehabilitation.
Building Strength and Independence
Exercises develop hip strength, balance and a more controlled walking pattern. Walking distances and everyday tasks increase gradually.
Recovery commonly continues over several months, with further improvement possible through the first year. Work and driving require separate decisions based on physical demands and safe control.
Protecting the New Joint
Follow the precautions supplied for your operation. Advice about bending, turning and sleeping positions can differ, so do not assume every hip replacement follows the same restrictions.
Low-impact activities may become suitable as recovery progresses. High-impact sport and heavy repetitive loading require specific discussion.
Risks and Warning Signs
Complications can include infection, blood clots, dislocation, fracture and nerve injury. Differences in leg length, persistent pain or implant loosening are also possible.
Seek prompt medical assessment for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever or new calf pain and swelling. Chest pain or sudden breathlessness requires emergency care because a clot may have travelled to the lungs.
A painful hip that suddenly becomes deformed or cannot bear weight also needs urgent assessment. Do not try to reposition it yourself.
Hip Replacement Surgery Cost in Turkey
A quotation should specify the replacement type and implant, together with hospital care, anaesthesia and rehabilitation. Previous surgery or complex deformity may change the proposed operation.
Ask which investigations and follow-up visits are included. Separate the clinical costs from accommodation, transport and the possibility of an extended stay.
Share existing scans, medical reports and details of earlier hip procedures. Confirm how long local monitoring is expected and who will provide rehabilitation after you return home.
Arrange medical advice about your return journey before booking flights. Surgery and prolonged immobility during travel can increase blood clot risk, so travel planning belongs within the recovery plan.
This information does not replace an individual consultation. Implant selection, treatment suitability and recovery require clinical assessment.

I fortunately came across Dr. Mesut while researching orthopedic surgeons in Antalya after suffering a severe heel fracture in the United States. From the beginning, I was uneasy with the treatment plan proposed by my U.S. surgeon. After more than a year of being told that it was simply a “bad break” that would take time to heal, it was finally discovered that I had also severely sprained my ankle at the time of the injury, resulting in partial ligament and tendon tears that had been missed entirely.
When these tears were eventually identified, the solution I was given was ankle fusion surgery, an option that would have permanently limited my mobility. This did not sit right with me.
While in Antalya for my spouse's dental care, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. Mesut at MSM Klinik. His team quickly arranged comprehensive testing to fully understand what was happening with my foot. Dr. Mesut confirmed the ligament and tendon damage but was very clear that ankle fusion was not the appropriate solution for my case. Through my time there, it was clear to me that he treats a wide range of complex orthopedic conditions, not just ankle cases, which gave me even more confidence in his overall experience. From our first conversation, I felt confident in his expertise. He immediately recognized the complexity of my injury, especially given that my foot had healed incorrectly over the course of more than a year and a half.
After returning to the U.S. and doing further research, I made the decision to go back to Antalya and proceed with surgery under Dr. Mesut’s care. One of the major factors in my decision was his use of stem cell therapy, an option that was never even discussed by my doctors in the United States.
From start to finish, the level of professionalism and compassion at MSM Klinik was exceptional. Everyone in the office was attentive, organized, and supportive. Eli was especially wonderful, managing all logistics and providing clear translation throughout the entire process, which made everything seamless and stress free. During my stay, I also received IV vitamin and supportive therapies at the office designed to aid healing and speed recovery.
I am now just 2.5 weeks post surgery and already able to walk at approximately 50% weight bearing. In the U.S., I would have been non-weight bearing for at least two months before even beginning this stage. My recovery has been faster and smoother than I ever expected, and everything is healing remarkably well.

My wife had a knee injection at MSM Klinik in Antalya in Turkey last year. She had been suffering from severe knee pain for several years and the injection really helped her regain mobility. So, we returned to MSM Klinik this year, where she has now had a second injection, which we expect will help her sustain her ability to walk at least another six months free of pain. My wife has been referred to NHS orthopedic specialists in the UK and is waiting for their diagnosis also. Waiting times are very long still in the UK, so the assistance provided by MSM Klinik in Turkey in the meantime has been extremely helpful.

I visited Antalya in early May of 2025, while experiencing acute sciatica pain going down my left leg. I got in touch with MSM Klinik and had the exam scheduled promptly after talking over the phone with the staff. I had the X-rays and MRI done very promptly at Yasam Hastanesi Life Hospital. MSM Klinik staff, Mr. Mursel, took me to the hospital and was with me there while I was getting the x-rays and MRI done. Then he drove me back to the MSM Klinik where we reviewed the results with the Doctor. The Doctor appeared very knowledgeable and offered an effective treatment plan. However, it was beyond my budget. I continued to manage my back pain with NSAID.
I'm giving 5 starts for the service and promptness, but not for any medical procedure as no medical procedure was done.
The Doctor, his assistant Mr. Murcel, and the office staff were very kind, professional and attentive to my issue, which deserves a 5 star review.
The MRI, x-rays and the consultation were reasonably priced.

Many implants function for decades, but there is no guaranteed replacement date or lifespan. Wear, loosening, infection or injury can lead to revision surgery.
Will My Legs Be Exactly the Same Length?
The surgeon aims for appropriate leg length and joint stability, but perfect equality cannot be promised. Report a persistent sense of imbalance during follow-up.
Can Both Hips Be Replaced Together?
Some patients may be considered for simultaneous replacement, while others are better suited to staged procedures. Health risks and the demands of recovering on both sides must be assessed.
Will I Be Able to Walk Normally Again?
Many people improve their walking and independence. The result also depends on muscle strength, pre-existing limitations and other conditions affecting mobility.
